Chief Executive Officer
The Balancing Pool (BP) was established in 1998 by the Government of Alberta to help manage the transition to competition in Alberta's electric industry. The company is a non-profit statutory corporation, with a Board of Directors appointed by the Minister of Energy. The powers and duties of the Balancing Pool are outlined in the Electrical Utilities Act (EUA). In 2010 the Balancing Pool had revenue of $365 million and assets of $1.7 billion.
The Balancing Pool has three major responsibilities.
In addition, the Balancing Pool is an active participant in various discussions and negotiations in Alberta's power industry, interacting with power generators and consumers, industry groups and the Alberta Department of Energy.
The Balancing Pool has a current staff of eight and draws extensively on expert advice in managing both commercial claims that arise through PPAs and its investment portfolio.
The President and CEO reports to the Board of the Balancing Pool and is responsible to implement an overall strategy, which will of necessity change over time, through a well managed staff while maintaining relationships within the power industry.
